Is it a Marmalade, a Jam or a Jelly?

It’s that time of year again when we are neck deep in cutting, pitting and shredding those very tart seville oranges.  Only used for marmalade, those orange fruits can not be eaten raw, or beware an unsuspecting newbie tries it here in production for the pleasure of the rest of us.

But what is the difference between a marmalade, jam and jelly?  We hear this popular question often and it is quite simple.  Marmalade is made using any citrus type fruits, such as oranges, grapefruits, lemons and limes.   The entire fruit is used including the juice, skin and pith.  Jam on the other hand never uses citrus fruits, but is made using all other types of fruits or berries, including the pulp and skins too.   Jellies are simply made from the pressed juice of all fruits (except citrus), without any pulp or skins.

In one of our products we make we add peaches to our seville oranges, to create “Peach Marmalade”, but because of the addition of orange rind and juice to the ingredients it is most definitely a marmalade.  This one has all the elements of tart and sweet, a perfect balance between both marmalade and jam.   Visit us for Product Information, Recipes, Where to Buy and Online Shopping www.greavesjams.com.

Beets Me!

Yes, its Beets time, and we are all seeing Red!  These lovely red beauties are Ontario grown and come to us only once a year just after harvest time, to make our delicious Greaves Salad Beets.  We like to buy the large juicy ones, and hand cut them into bite sized chunks perfect for your salads, or relish trays.  They are sweet but tangy, made with real ingredients like vinegar and sugar and Beets of course.

I never used to like beets, or more accurately, never really had them growing up as a child.  But now I’m hooked, having been exposed to them for over 20 years, and enjoy them with many foods that require a pickle, or just added to my salad, YUM!  This healthy vibrant vegie is deserving of a place at our table, so remember some when planning your holiday meals.  Always a great condiment when having Fondue, Turkey, Ham, Wine & Cheese or simply Hors d’oeuvres!  Enjoy!

We do ship them throughout Ontario to many great Markets, fine grocery stores and butcher shops to name a few.  Visit our retailer section on our website to find a retailer near you, visit our store or order online www.greavesjams.com.  You can always reach us at 1-800-515-9939.

Grape Harvest is Here

We’re making Greaves Jelly

Fall has now arrived, colours are slowly changing, but one thing I still see are grapes hanging from the vines all over our Niagara-on-the-Lake region.   We have just received our first load of fresh concord grapes ready for pressing into juice to make our famous Pure Greaves Grape Jelly.   The aroma is intoxicating, you just can’t wait for the pressing to begin.  Once you’ve picked up some jelly, try our delicious meatball recipe which is sure to please, see http://greavesjams.com/395.html for the recipe.  Send me your recipes too!
